Higher-order nonlinear evolution equation for interfacial waves in a two-layer fluid system.

چکیده
An alternative type of nonlinear evolution equation is derived that describes interfacial waves in a two-layer fiuid system. The equation presented here is a higher-order version of the Benjamin-Ono (BO) equation. A solitary-wave solution of the equation is obtained by means of a singular perturbation method. The characteristics of the solution are discussed in comparison with those for a higher-order BO equation of the Lax type.

A Higher-order Internal Wave Model Accounting for Large Bathymetric Variations
Abstract. A higher-order strongly nonlinear model is derived to describe the evolution of large amplitude internal waves over arbitrary bathymetric variations in a two-layer system where the upper layer is shallow while the lower layer is comparable to the characteristic wavelength. The new system of nonlinear evolution equations with variable coefficients is a generalization of the deep config...
متن کاملNonlinear Electrohydrodynamic Stability of Two Superposed Bounded Fluids in the Presence of Interfacial Surface Charges
The method of multiple scales is used to analyse the nonlinear propagation of waves on the interface between two superposed dielectric fluids with uniform depths in the presence of a normal electric field, taking into account the interfacial surface charges. The evolution of the amplitude for travelling waves is governed by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation which gives the criterion for modulati...
متن کاملDispersive hydrodynamics in viscous fluid conduits.
The evolution of the interface separating a conduit of light, viscous fluid rising buoyantly through a heavy, more viscous, exterior fluid at small Reynolds numbers is governed by the interplay between nonlinearity and dispersion. Previous authors have proposed an approximate model equation based on physical arguments, but a precise theoretical treatment for this two-fluid system with a free bo...
متن کاملBLOW-UP AND NONGLOBAL SOLUTION FOR A FAMILY OF NONLINEAR HIGHER-ORDER EVOLUTION PROBLEM
In this paper we consider a kind of higher-order evolution equation as^{kt^{k} + ^{k&minus1}u/t^{k&minus1} +• • •+ut &minus{delta}u= f (u, {delta}u,x). For this equation, we investigate nonglobal solution, blow-up in finite time and instantaneous blow-up under some assumption on k, f and initial data. In this paper we employ the Test function method, the eneralized convexity method an...
متن کاملLong Interfacial Waves in a Vortex Sheet
Interfacial non-linear waves propagating in a two layer medium are qualitatively changed due to the action of a vortex-sheet. In the frame-work of the so-called shallow water theory, linear wave speeds of the barocline modes are determined . The differential equation describing the interface elevation is derived . The coefficients of this equation are functions of the stratification, the depth ...
